Looking south across thermopolium (a) to doorway to atrium (2) of IX.7.25 The doorway between the shop and the atrium had the threshold of a dark marble and was closed by two battens. See Mau in Bullettino dell’Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica (DAIR), 1882, (p.148) According to Boyce, in the south wall was a vaulted niche (h.0.44, w.0.44, d.0.51, h. above floor 1.20). Its inside walls were coated with orange-coloured stucco. Above the niche was a painting (h.0.30, w.0.73) of the two serpents confronting at an altar. He references – Not. Scavi, 1880, 395; Bull. According to Mau, the street door was furnished with a threshold of lava, which closed in the usual manner. There was also a small door, on the left, to enter by. The flooring was good opus signinum showing rows of white stones embedded in the crushed brick or tile. See Mau in BdI, 1882, (p.148)

IX.7.24 Pompeii. May 2005. West wall with square niches. According to Mau, two niches were found in the right wall of the shop, above the podium. The floor of the lower of these was formed by a sheet of grey marble; the rest was of white stucco. The upper was all faced in marble, and also part of the wall (above it at least by 0.18) but nothing remained of this facing, other than a few small pieces and it seemed that it was removed by antique excavators. It was most likely that the niche was adorned in the guise of a temple, and would have contained the images of the Lares. See Mau in BdI, 1882, (p.148)
